Senior Waveguide Optics R&D Engineer

Berlin, Germany

€110,000 + Benefits

The company is an advanced semiconductor development and manufacturing company dedicated to enabling the integration of photonics and electronics through both monolithic and hybrid approaches to device design and packaging. This is a great opportunity to join an organisation specialising in optoelectronics, fiber-optics sensors, and photonics systems applications.

The role as Senior Waveguide Optics R&D Engineer is to design dielectric waveguide planar lightwave circuits (PLC) based on high index contrast waveguide components (polarization independent waveguides, spot-size converter, AWG based Mux and Demux, 1xN, 2XN splitters, mode-converter, power-tap, passive/active hydrids) for optical communication.

Additional tasks to perform simulation tool using Eigenmode Expansion Method (FIMMWAVE/FIMMPROP), Beam Propagation Method (Optiwave), and CrossLight; and device layout GDSII generation and optimization, as well as analysing dielectric waveguide material characterization and device performance to meet design and manufacturing requirements.

The benefits of joining this fantastic company are to work in a high-tech environment and to join a world class, fast growing engineering team addressing the rapidly growing adoption of photonics and opto-electronics solutions in communications, data centres, healthcare and the Internet of Things around the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design of dielectric waveguide planar lightwave circuits (PLC) based on high index contrast waveguide components (polarization independent waveguides, spot-size converter, AWG based Mux and Demux, 1xN, 2XN splitters, mode-converter, power-tap, passive/active hydrids) for optical communication.
  • Perform simulation tool using Eigenmode Expansion Method (FIMMWAVE/FIMMPROP), Beam Propagation Method (Optiwave), and CrossLight; and device layout GDSII generation and optimization.
  • Analysis of dielectric waveguide material characterization and device performance to meet design and manufacturing requirements. Manage and work with test lab team members on development and improvement of precise material characterization and optical device test techniques.

Required qualification

  • Post-graduate Degree (PhD training in optics, photonics or optoelectronics engineering preferred)
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years’ working experience with technical background in planar lightwave circuit (PLC – AWG, mux/demux) product development with close working collaboration with 8-inch Silicon wafer fab processes on product R&D and improvement
  • Proven working experience in passive optical communications products and program management in the manufacturing industry
